What is burnout?
Recognized by the World Health Organization as an occupational syndrome in 2019, burnout is characterized by three dimensions: intense emotional and physical exhaustion, mental detachment from work and life, and a significant drop in the feeling of efficacy.
This is not passing sadness. It is a breakdown of the body's regulatory system.
Women develop burnout more frequently than men. The main reason is not biological: it's the accumulated overload from years of multitasking and the expectation of doing everything perfectly.
What happens in the body?
Chronic stress keeps the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis constantly activated. The adrenal glands secrete elevated and prolonged levels of cortisol, which compromises immune function, disrupts sleep, alters the hormonal profile, and impacts metabolic health.
Chronically elevated cortisol increases insulin resistance, contributes to visceral fat gain, reduces progesterone production, and interferes with serotonin and dopamine synthesis. Mental exhaustion produces concrete physical consequences.
The signs that precede collapse.
Burnout rarely comes as a surprise. It follows a long period of warning signs that are often ignored: insomnia despite fatigue, increasing irritability, difficulty concentrating, a feeling that nothing is ever enough, and diminished pleasure in things that once mattered.
And that feeling of being present in everything, but connected to nothing.
Recognizing these signs early is what differentiates a quick recovery from a much longer process.
